Cosmetic acupuncture

According to the results of my national cross-sectional survey of acupuncture in practice in the UK (published by the British Medical Journal) the number of patients turning to traditional acupuncturists, like myself, for help with infertility has increased fivefold over the past 10 years and now accounts for approximately 9% of our practice.  This increase parallels the growing evidence that acupuncture given with embryo transfer improves rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing IVF.

For me the percentage has been somewhat higher and over time it has become one of my specialisms. One of the greatest joys of my work is in helping couples to achieve their dream of having a family. Research shows that acupuncture can help to improve fertility by:

1. Improving the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs
2. Regulating the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles
3. Increasing the blood flow to the uterus and increasing the thickness of the uterine lining
4. Relaxing the patient and decreasing their stress
5. Preventing the uterus from contracting
6. Lessening the side effects of drugs used in IVF
7. Strengthening the immune system
8. Improving semen to create better quality and quantity of embryos
9. Decreasing chances of miscarriage
